Personal disappointment

World’s fastest triathlete on the Ironman-distance has to drop out at the Ironman Western Australia – Looking forward to a positive year 2014

Busselton. Andreas Raelert was not allowed to experience the positive race result at the SunSmart Ironman Western Australia which he had hoped for. The 37-year old had to drop out of the race due to the same problems that he had suffered at the Ironman Hawaii. After a good swim he had quit the Ironman race during the bike leg. "My head is down," said Andreas Raelert, "I am very disappointed."

After his withdrawal from the Ironman Hawaii due to a pinched nerve, Andreas Raelert consequently prepared for the Ironman Western Australia. “My form was promising,” said the co-favorite. He went to the starting line with Bib Number 1 and had a good start into the race in the water. He was among the top six from the beginning and he finished the 3.8 kilometer swim course at the Busselton Jetty in sixth place after 48:20 minutes. The Australian Luke Bell led the race after the swim together with Frenchman Jeremy Jurkiewicz (47:02 minutes).

On the bike, the German early made up time on the leaders, but Andreas Raelert also felt problems coming up early on the bike. After 80 kilometers, he had to quit the race due to the same difficulties that had already occurred at the Ironman Hawaii. "It's hard to express my disappointment in words," said Andreas Raelert. After the race he wanted to thank all of his supporters for their help and their good wishes. "I also want to congratulate all the finishers and especially the winners of the race warmly." Jeremy Jurkiewicz won the Ironman Western Australia in 8:08:16 hours.

"In the moment the disappointment runs deep," said Andreas Raelert. In the next weeks, the Raelert-Brothers will plan the upcoming season together with their coach Wolfram Bott, their team and their partners. "The year 2013 was a year with some ups and some downs for Michael and me," said Andreas Raelert looking back at the past few months. "But we are very confident that we will discover a successful triathlon year in 2014."
