Ironman 70.3 Edinburgh: Andreas Raelert takes the victory

Offensive race strategy and a strong performance in Scotland – Clear win on a very demanding course at the inaugural competition

Edinburgh. Andreas Raelert took the win at the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Edinburgh thanks to a strong performance. Early in the competition, the Rostockian opened up a huge gap and celebrated a clear victory in Scotland. He celebrated the win in 3:55:21 hours ahead of the Italian Alessandro Degasperi, who finished second in 4:02:15 hours. Third place went to Frenchman Yvan Jarrige in 4:02:58 hours. "It was anything else than a simple race today,” said Andreas Raelert after the finish, “but I am very satisfied. The weather and the race course made the competition very demanding."

Strong winds caused course changes already in the morning, when the swim course had to be shortened significantly. Instead of the planned course of 1900 meters the first part of the race was downsized to a swim of 950 meters in a rough sea. Andreas Raelert managed the course in 13:53 minutes and reached the first transition in ninth place. "The swim was a real challenge due to high waves," explained the Rostockian, "conditions were very difficult today. That’s why I concentrated on my own rhythm." British Elliot Smales led the pro field out of the water in 13:08 minutes.

After starting onto the bike course, Andreas Raelert quickly took over the lead. "I started with high pace to catch up with the leaders early," said Andreas Raelert, "especially technically, the course was very challenging." He managed the 90-kilometer course in 2:22:18 hours and reached T2 already with a lead of more than five minutes. "I can be very satisfied with my performance on the bike," he explained later.

Despite his clear lead, Andreas Raelert started into the final half marathon focused and with high pace. In 1:15:11 hours, he had the fastest split here as well and increased his lead on the way to the finish line. "On the last few meters, I enjoyed the great atmosphere. I really celebrated the finish line," said Andreas Raelert, "it was a very tough race from start to finish on a challenging course. The more intense I experienced this finish line."
