Micha wins Laguna Phuket Triathlon

Successful competition in Thailand – Start-to-finish victory in warm conditions thanks to a strong performance on the bike

Phuket. Michael Raelert celebrated a nice victory thanks to a very strong performance at the Laguna Phuket Triathlon today. In 2:30:14 hours the Rostockian won the 22nd edition of this legendary race in Thailand. Swiss Ruedi Wild, a two-time winner of this race, took second place in 2:32:57 hours ahead of British Stuart Hayes (2:36:17 hours). "This has been fun," said Michael Raelert after the finish, "indeed, the weather conditions were a huge contrast compared to the temperatures at home, but it went well today right from the beginning."

On the 1.8-kilometer swim course, Michael Raelert early took his place at the front of the field to exit the water in first position after 23:55 minutes. The Australian Michael Murphy and Stuart Hayes followed close behind, but on the bike Michael Raelert then really put the pedal to the middle. He rode the 55 kilometer long bike course in 1:20:06 hours, it was by far the best split of the day. Stuart Hayes and Ruedi Wild reached the second transition four minutes behind the lead. "My bike leg was pretty well," said Michael Raelert.

On the final run course of 12 kilometers, Ruedi Wild managed the fastest time (42:43 minutes) and made up some ground. But Michael Raelert had the second fastest split in 43:44 minutes and could soak up the atmosphere of this prestigious race on the final meters. "It is a great experience to be part of this race," Michael Raelert said after the race, "if you can have a race like this one today, it's all even better."

The trip to Thailand might have a perfect finale next Sunday. Michael Raelert is on the start list for the Challenge Laguna, which will be held next Sunday on the half Ironman distance of 1.9 kilometers swimming, 90 kilometers cycling and 21.1 kilometers running.
