Michael Raelert celebrates third European title in Elsinore

Ironman 70.3 European Championship ends with a huge success – Rostockian sets the pace at the inaugural Championship event in Denmark right from the beginning

Elsinore. Michael Raelert celebrated a great success at the Ironman 70.3 European Championship in Elsinore, Denmark, this Sunday. After winning the continental title in 2010 and 2012, he took the victory at the inaugural European Championship event in Denmark thanks to a convincing performance in all of the three disciplines. Michael Raelert won the race in 3:42:52 hours ahead of the two Germans Andreas Boecherer (3:44:26 hours) and Nils Frommhold (3:45:25 hours). "I am so happy I took the win. Titles like these are really nice," said Michael Raelert, "especially when you have to wait for the title for a few years, it's much more intense then."

Michael Raelert finished the swim course in 21:45 minutes, it was his first big mark during the race. "The swim was working out really well," said the Rostockian who placed himself at the top of the field directly after the start and led the field out of the water after the 1.9 kilometer long swim course ahead of Nils Frommhold (21:48 minutes) and Pieter Heemeryck (21:51 minutes) from Belgium. "The start into the race was already very fast," said Michael Raelert, "that was absolutely according to my plan. And the bike went on in the same way." He rode at the front with a lot of pressure being accompanied by Nils Frommhold and as well by Andreas Boecherer on the final kilometers. Michael Raelert completed the 90-kilometer course in 2:01:52 hours and reached T2 in the lead.

Throughout the final half marathon, Michael Raelert was able to show his running strength. He continuously put time on his pursuers Andreas Boecherer and Nils Frommhold during the 21.1 kilometers. He eventually crossed the finish line 1:34 minutes ahead of Andreas Boecherer and 2:33 minutes ahead of Nils Frommhold. "Generally, I hope I can go a little bit faster in the run," said Michael Raelert after the race, "but I really enjoyed this run to the title today. This success makes me proud and happy." Michael Raelert ran the half marathon in 1:14:36 ​​hours to take the third Ironman 70.3 European Championship title in his career.
