Ironman 70.3 Rapperswil: Michael Raelert wins again

Two time world champion celebrates a remarkable success

Michael Raelert celebrated a great victory today at Powerbar Ironman 70.3 Rapperswil. The 31-year old from Rostock marked a new course record in Rapperswil and dominated the race around the Lake of Zurich. In 3:44:13 hours the two-time world champion at this distance distanced his concurrents to more than six minutes.

"The race went as well as I had hoped for", Michael Raelert said after the finish very satisfied. Despite of heavy rain especially at the start he moved to the front of the strong pro field on the first meters of the swim. "On the bike I realized that the training sessions I did during my training camp at Lake Chiemsee apparently helped to improve my shape", Michael Raelert said smilingly after the race.

Michael Raelert jumped out of the water in second position – he was side by side with Manuel Küng from Switzerland after 22:32 minutes in the very cool water of the Lake of Zurich. After a quick transition the two-time world champion then drove away from his rivals with an impressive performance on bike. The younger one of the two Raelert-Brothers needed only 2:06:48 hours for the challenging course of 90 kilometers around the Lake of Zurich – this time was equivalent to an average speed of 42.63 km/h. "Today everything has worked out very well”, Michael Raelert said smilingly, “on the bike I felt pretty good." Although there was a tough group of contenders behind him he extended his lead more and more.

With a comfortable lead of 4:16 minutes Michael Raelert reached the second transition area. Raynard Tissink from South Africa led the group with ten pursuers – but they did not get to see 31-year old again. On the run course the lead of Michael Raelert increased steadily. He ran a fast half marathon split in 1:12:03 hours and touched the finish line after an awesome fast time of 3:44:13 hours. Michael Raelert won in a dominant way ahead of the two Belgians Bart Aernouts (3:51:04 hours) and Bruno Clerbout (3:51:37 hours). "My goal for this race was to be able to beat my time from the year 2010", the winner said after his race. Michael Raelert stood there with a smile: "And it worked great." Two years earlier, Michael Raelert needed 3:47:47 hours on this course.

The PowerBar IRONMAN 70.3 Rapperswil-Jona will take a break after its sixth race on June 3 rd 2012. “It’s been a tough decision but the city are re-constructing the area directly around the start and finish line, which would force changes to major parts of the race and unforseeable costs in doing so”, says Nico Aeschiman, Managing Director of the World Triathlon Corporation’s (WTC) Swiss subsidiary BK Sportpromotion AG. “However we do understand the city’s intentions. There is no bitterness”, adds BK Sportpromotion AG’s second Managing Director, Felix Eichenberger.
